Hysteria, desperation and heat – various forms of masculinity at an Australian beach. The critics have received the film enthusiastically, and the applause at the Cannes Film Festival lasted six minutes. Quite a simple story of a middle-aged man who returns to his native land to surf with his son on “his” childhood beach…

However, he’s humiliated by a group of local macho men who claim the place. He’s drawn into a conflict that quickly reaches a breaking point. Humiliation turns into aggression. Tension, mockery and cruelty are increasing, as is the temperature of the heated summer. Neither side is willing to yield, and rising madness leads our man to the brink of his powers. The expected idyllic summer turns into a fight for life…

Psychological thriller THE SURFER, directed by Lorcan Finnegan, tells a nail-biting story about a clash with the past, cultural differences, and the fight for personal freedom. Nicolas Cage excels in the protagonist’s role, delivering one of the most compelling performances of his career. The film was shot on the west coast of Australia, including the Yallingup and Margaret River regions, which adds a unique ambience of well-known Australian beaches to the movie.
