Boy is a dreamer who loves Michael Jackson. It’s 1984 and Boy lives with his nan along with his brother Rocky and a band of other deserted cousins. His other hero, his father Alamein, is the subject of Boy’s fantasies, and he imagines him as a deep sea diver, war hero and a close relation of Michael Jackson. When Alamein returns home after seven years away, Boy is forced to confront the man he thought he remembered, find his own potential and learn to get along without the hero he had been hoping for.

The film was an instant hit when it opened in cinemas in New Zealand and it holds several New Zealand box office records – the highest box office takings for a New Zealand production in its first week as well as the highest grossing New Zealand film ever.
